Leather has been the go-to for work gloves for generations. It resists abrasion, handles heat and sharp edges better than most fabrics, and moulds to your hand over time.

But "leather" covers a lot of ground. The animal, the layer of the hide and the lining all change how a glove feels and how long it lasts.

Relative ratings, a general guide to how these leathers typically compare.

02 / Cowhide: the workhorse

Thick, tough and resistant to abrasion. Cowhide is the standard for general labour and heavy-duty gloves. It takes longer to break in than softer leathers, but a good pair lasts in rough conditions.

Good for: material handling, lumber and rebar, rigging, landscaping, stick welding and general construction.

03 / Goatskin: built for feel

Goatskin carries natural lanolin that keeps it soft and flexible. It's thinner than cowhide yet strong for its weight, so you get fingertip feel without a glove that falls apart. That's why it's the standard for TIG welding gloves.

04 / Deerskin: stays supple

One of the softest glove leathers. Deerskin conforms to the hand and is known for staying pliable even after it's been wet and dried out. It's less abrasion-resistant than cowhide, so it suits jobs where comfort and feel come first.

Good for: mechanics, equipment operators, drivers and light maintenance.

05 / Grain vs split

A hide is thick enough to slice into layers. Which layer a glove uses matters as much as the animal.

OUTER LAYER

GRAIN

  • Smoother, tighter, more flexible
  • Better dexterity
  • Sheds a little moisture
  • Generally costs more

INNER LAYERS

SPLIT

  • Rough, suede-like texture
  • Strong abrasion & heat resistance for the price
  • Less dexterous
  • Absorbs water more readily

SHOP RULE

Grain when feel matters. Split when durability and value matter.

06 / Leather vs synthetic

Synthetic palms are thinner, more consistent and often cheaper, and work well for light automotive and assembly work. Real leather lasts longer under abrasion and heat.

07 / Canadian winters & care

Linings matter

Fleece adds real warmth. Half-lined gloves like the Haul L2 and L3 keep the palm flexible.

Size up slightly

Room for warm air and circulation. A tight glove gets cold faster.

Beat the moisture

Wet leather loses warmth and stiffens. Keep a spare pair in snow and slush.

Air dry

At room temperature. Heaters, radiators and dryers crack leather.

Condition it

A leather conditioner keeps gloves supple, especially after a soaking.

Rotate pairs

Two pairs in wet seasons so each one dries fully.

08 / FAQ

Which leather is the most durable?

Cowhide is generally the most durable and abrasion-resistant of the common glove leathers, which is why most heavy-duty work gloves use it.

Which stays softest after getting wet?

Deerskin and goatskin recover better than cowhide after being wet and dried, with deerskin especially known for staying pliable.

Are split leather gloves lower quality?

No. Split leather is a different layer of the hide with different strengths: excellent abrasion and heat resistance for the price.
