Heat. Spatter. Sharp steel. No single welding glove wins every fight. A glove thin enough to feel a tungsten torch won't survive a day of stick, and a heavy stick glove makes TIG work clumsy.

This guide matches each welding process to the right leather, lining and cuff, and shows where every Murbie Forge model fits.

Thin goatskin, unlined or barely lined. Maximum torch and rod control.

02 / Feel vs protection

Every welding glove trades one for the other. More leather and more lining block heat and spatter, and cost you fingertip control. Here's where each Forge model sits.

Positions reflect leather type and lining from Murbie product specs.

TIG: what to look for

  • Goatskin palm. Natural lanolin keeps it soft and flexible while staying strong.
  • Unlined or minimally lined, so you can feel the rod.
  • Aramid stitching that holds up to heat better than cotton or polyester.
  • Split leather cuff to guard the wrist without stiffening the fingers.

Stick: what to look for

  • Thick cowhide. Tough and abrasion-resistant. Split cowhide gives serious heat protection for the money.
  • Fleece or cotton lining to insulate against radiant heat.
  • Reinforced palm and thumb, where gloves wear out first.
  • Long gauntlet cuff so spatter can't drop into your sleeve.

05 / Cuff length

Measured from fingertip to the end of the cuff. Short cuffs move easier. Long cuffs overlap your sleeve so sparks can't get in.

SHOP RULE

If spatter ever lands between your glove and your sleeve, go longer.

06 / Make them last

▲

Air dry

Away from heaters. Direct heat turns leather stiff and brittle.

▲

Not oven mitts

Brief contact only. Use tongs for glowing metal.

▲

Retire them

Burn-throughs, hardened patches or split seams mean it's done.

SAFETY

Keep them dry. Wet or sweat-soaked gloves conduct electricity far more readily, raising shock risk in stick welding. Swap to a dry pair.

07 / FAQ

Can I use TIG gloves for stick welding?

Not for regular stick work. TIG gloves are thinner and usually unlined, so heat and spatter reach your hands fast.

Can I use stick gloves for TIG?

You can, but most welders hate it. Thick gloves make it hard to feed filler rod smoothly and control the torch.

Why are TIG gloves usually goatskin?

Goatskin is thin, soft and strong for its weight, and its natural lanolin keeps it supple. That's the feel TIG demands.
